Global Healing
Join us for a transformative day of learning, dialogue, and cultural exploration at the New Orleans National Vodou Day Symposium. This event brings together scholars, practitioners, and community leaders to explore the history, spirituality, and contemporary relevance of African Traditional Religions (ATR) and Vodou. Through engaging discussions, artistic expression, and immersive exhibits, we will examine the sacred connections between healing, ecology, and ancestral wisdom.

Afro-Ecology Exhibit: Exploring the Botanicals of New Orleans Voodoo
Discover the healing and mystical properties of botanicals used in New Orleans Voodoo, both past and present. This immersive exhibit offers a hands-on exploration of plants revered for their ability to heal, protect, and manifest, with insights into their historical and modern uses. Through live displays and educational handouts, learn how many plants found in our local landscape have deep roots in African and Indigenous traditions. From the nourishing fruit of the Date Palm to the symbolic strength and resilience of all palm species, this exhibit highlights the enduring connection between nature, culture, and spirituality.

Kids Program: A Celebration of Culture, Rhythm, and Creativity
Designed to engage and inspire children of all ages, this interactive program introduces young participants to the vibrant culture and traditions of Vodou through music, dance, art, and storytelling. Activities include:

📚 Book Readings (Ages 2-6): Explore stories that share the cultural heritage of Vodou, with a focus on its deep connection to Louisiana.

💃 Dance Class: Cymbals, Shakes & Movement (Ages 2nd-4th Grade & 5th Grade and Up): Learn African diasporic dance movements that connect body and spirit, led by experienced instructors.

🎨 Art Activities (Ages 2-10): Get creative with coloring pages for younger artists and the opportunity to design veves—sacred symbols in Vodou— for older participants.

🪘 Rhythm Class (Ages 5 and Up): Discover the cultural significance of African diasporic rhythms and experience the mind-body connection through drumming and percussion.
👟 What to Bring: Comfortable, movement-friendly shoes (or dance barefoot if preferred). Parents should accompany children and may bring a comfort pillow or blanket.
